I thought it would be cool to see how many marketing channels have popped up over the last several years compare to whats been out there forever already. When you look at this time line it is even more interesting to see all the opportunities that marketers have just in the last 10 years. I am sure we missed some channels (feel free to let us know in the comments – I know you will), but we tried to include every major one from as far back as we could go in recorded history. (of course we added our companies logo – because companies like ours are the future

Here is a question I received yesterday that I felt would make a good social marketing post (because I have been asked numerous times before).
I get confused on the social media sites like, Facebook, Twitter, even Skidoo etc. Should I be setting up a profile under my name to follow me specifically or setting up something that tells people to follow my website?
Here are my thoughts: My answer depends on the specific network, as well as what you are trying to accomplish, but let me first touch on the specific networks you mentioned in this question.

About a month ago I had a conversation with an old school mate that found me via Facebook. It has been about 14 – 15 years since I last spoke/saw/did anything with this guy. We mostly just talked about what I do for a living, but it was interesting for me to hear his thoughts and ideas about our industry (and how he thought he did the same thing for a living). I have to admit the conversation was a bit irritating, and I ended up having to tell my old friend I had to . I can’t remember the reason I gave him, but the real reason was I was two seconds away from losing it and really giving him a piece of my mind!

This could not have worked out more perfectly for what I am about to post. I was just checking my email and received a viral marketing question from a reader who sells Pet Carriers. She was asking me what she could come up with that would be a good viral marketing post and wanted some ideas for some good content that would do well. heh
Here is why I am so giddy about this. Just before I left for my trip to Disneyland, my son was out in our garage and he was messing around with our cats pet carrier. I went ahead and took out the old iPhone and snapped some shots knowing that it would be good material for a later date. Remember this is me, the guy who can’t think about anything without trying to find a way to turn int viral. Here are the pictures I snapped:

I recently made a decision to sell my car because I want to buy a new cross-over SUV so I have a little more room in the vehicle for things and what not. My old car (I now say old car because I sold it in about 3 hours after listing it) was a 2001 Ford Focus. I know that Focus’s are not considered hot or hip vehicles, even though there are some out there that trick them out, so I had thought about going the easy route and trading it in when making my new purchase, but the business man in me just couldn’t hack the thought of getting a trade-in value for the car that I knew would be 50% less than what I could sell it for on the private market. Because of that, I decided to put my marketing background to work for me and listed it on Craigslist and a local news station’s classified section here in Utah, ksl.com. It worked like a charm.
